A Rock Garden in Colorado

Rock garden Mood Board

Perfect weather for making a rock garden.

Summer is here, and our weather is still cool.

Don’t you love it?

I don’t tolerate heat well (I do much better with cold). And that’s why living in the high desert surrounded by picturesque mountains is so awesome. Yes. I love Colorado!

We moved into our little house just seven months ago, and we’re finally getting the inside the way we want it. But outside? That’s another story!

Because high desert tends to be dry, our homeowner’s association elected to rip out all the grass and trees and cover everything with rocks.

This is NOT xeriscaping!

It’s just. ROCKS.

And every townhouse on our block has the exact same plot of rocks in front.

See the little piles of rocks by the bench? That’s the extent of our rock garden thus far.

So I got to thinking.

What if I made a mood board for what I’d like our front to look like?

Have you ever made a mood board?

It’s a great way to gather all your ideas together in one place to make sense of what you THINK you  might like to do and then narrow it all down to what you WILL do.

Canva has a great tutorial on how to make a mood board using their free tools. And Skill Share has a good one, too.

But I want to show you mine. These are ideas I MIGHT want to incorporate into my rock garden decor. Not all of them, of course.

I’ve actually made some of those cement orbs, but on a small scale for candles.

Here’s one ready for a candle or for planting.  Right now it’s holding paper olive leaves for another project, but I think I’ll plant a small succulent in it.

Here’s the other one, which I’ve filled with a lavender scented candle. It glows right through the “shell”  when it’s lit!

Do these orb projects inspire you? Would you like to see a tutorial on how to make them?

Let me know in the comments!

UPDATE!

I finally decided to take one of the pups from my zebra plant and transplant it into my cement ball planter. Here’s what it looks like now!
